Continuing its journey, Glenelly reveals a series of new vintages and rebranded packaging

May de Lencquesaing started a new adventure on South African soil in 2003 at the age of 78: Glenelly Estate was reborn. Today, 13 years later, alongside her two grandsons Nicolas Bureau and Arthur de Lencquesaing, the 8th generation of vintners and wine producers, they are reshaping what was already a great success. With her unique experience and vision, and the support of the winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain and viticulturalist Heinrich Louw, Glenelly is moving forward. Launching a series of new vintages across the range, the team has taken the opportunity to refresh the brand, creating a clearer, more distinctive identity that better conveys the three key elements that define these award-winning wines: power, elegance and balance.

A NEW LOGO AND WINE PACKAGING

The main elements of the old Glenelly logo remain, but in the form of a classic 19th century illustration of an elegant French lady riding side-saddle a powerful South African rhino. The floating and fragile glass in her hand creates a surprising contrast, symbol of a unique balance. An embossed stamp now appears on all wine labels, carrying with it nearly 250 years of the family’s involvement in the wine industry. Their ancestor, Elie Miailhe, was granted the title of ‘royal wine broker’ in 1783. May de Lencquesaing (née Miailhe), continues this tradition together with her grandchildren. Three specific pantone colours of red, orange and brown are the new corporate colours symbolizing three key elements; the sun, the soil and the wine. All the labels now have a more distinctive and high-end look and feel, incorporating embossing, high bold and gold foiling on premium quality paper.


GLENELLY’S THREE TIERS OF WINES

The Glass Collection range

The name and concept of the range remain the same. They are single varietal wines, with a great expression of the terroir and vintage. The new label incorporates a series of glasses illustrated in the same style as the logo, giving a sense of a collection vs. a single glass on the previous labels. A stronger differentiation between the red and the white wines has been achieved with the use of different colours for the stripes on the labels and the capsules. The back labels distinctively communicate the aromas of each wine using a series of illustrations. All bottles are screwcap. They are aimed at expressing each grape variety and vinified to be drunk in their youth.

Glenelly Glass Collection Chardonnay 2015

This natural ferment and unoaked Chardonnay has a bright and brilliant colour with a slight green hue. The wine shows complex aromas of citrus, papaya, melon and pear. On the palate there is a beautiful round comforting texture with wonderful length and intense fruit complexity. This zesty wine has palate weight from spending 8 months on its lees and will age very well.

Glenelly Glass Collection Syrah 2014

The Glass Collection Syrah is fermented naturally and matured in French oak for 12 months. It has a wonderful bright and rich colour with deep purple undertones. The aromatics of the wine are intense with jasmine, cinnamon and bacon coming through. The palate is well balanced and textured with soft round tannins and a pure fruit core shining through, with flavours of white pepper spice, spicy plum and dark berry.

Glenelly Glass Collection Merlot 2014

The Glass Collection Merlot is fermented naturally and matured in French oak for 12 months.  The wine is a deep rich coloured wine. It displays intense dark fruit aromas and spicy plums with touches of spearmint on the edge. This Merlot shows tremendous concentration, richness and generous fruit on the palate with fine but well structured and balanced tannins to embrace it all.

Accolades: The Glass Collection Merlot 2014 received a Gold Medal at the 2016 Veritas Awards.

Glenelly Glass Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

The Glass Collection Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented naturally and matured in French oak for 12 months. It offers a very complex nose with notes of cassis, blackcurrant, cherry, a touch of spices and perfume. The wine has a good tannin structure, perfect balance and length, with flavours of cedar, dried cherry and blackcurrant on the palate.

Glenelly Glass Collection Cabernet Franc 2014 (NEW)

This is the first release of the Cabernet Franc, as previously, it was blended into other wines. The wine was fermented naturally and matured in French oak for 12 months. It displays a deep rich colour with a purple tinge on the edge. The nose entices with its garrigue character of dried thyme, oregano and Cape Fynbos. The palate is dominated by flavours of dark cherries, blueberries and graphite, which gives it great interest. The tannins are silky and the finish is long and smooth.

The Estate Reserve range

Estate Reserve is the new, more recognizable and more pronounceable name for the previous Grand Vin range. It depicts a panoramic landscape view of Glenelly to convey a real sense of place and focus on terroir. The bottles have embossed tin capsules. They are the signature wines of the estate and have long ageing potential.

Glenelly Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2014

The Estate Reserve Chardonnay was naturally fermented, spent 9 months on its lees and a total of 10 months in new and 2nd-fill 500-litre casks. It displays a wonderful bright crisp colour. The nose offers vibrant citrus, lime zest and flint with hints of apple with underlying minerality and vanilla butterscotch. The palate is lush, with a creamy texture underpinned with beautiful mineral notes and hints of toasted almond and vanilla. The finish is fresh with great minerality.

Glenelly Estate Reserve Red 2011

The Estate Reserve is the ‘signature blend’ of Glenelly. The 2011 is a blend of 36% Syrah, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, naturally fermented and matured in French oak, 30% new,  for 18 months. It combines the rich, savoury character of Syrah: ripe fruit and hints of pepper-spice, with the specific flavours of Cabernet Sauvignon: blackberries, cherries, cassis and floral tones. It is supported by a firm tannin structure with elegant oak integration. The palate presents a tremendous concentration of flavours with great complexity and a fresh long finish.

Lady May

The Lady May, named in honour of Glenelly’s Grande Dame, comes predominantly from a single vineyard. The name and concept of the estate’s flagship Cabernet remain the same. However, the new packaging makes for a stronger identity, incorporating gold foiling on a dark brown background with the handwriting of May de Lencquesaing. The capsule is gold tin and embossed.

Lady May 2012, with new label, will be released mid 2017

The Lady May, Glenelly’s flagship estate wine named in honour of Glenelly’s Grande Dame, is an exceptionally graceful and stylish Cabernet Sauvignon with a dash of other Bordeaux varieties. It is naturally fermented and matured in new French oak for 24 months. Elegant and complex, the wine develops flavours of cassis, blackcurrant, dark cherry, raspberries and delicate spicy plum. The wine displays an exquisite structure, seamless oak, velvety tannins and a silky savoury finish and has a very good aging capability of 12 to 18 years. A sculpture of Madame de Lencquesaing by Maxime Real del Sarte (1948), a wedding gift, is depicted on the Lady May wine label.

Accolades: This highly acclaimed Cabernet has received many prestigious awards, including a pinnacle 5-star rating for the 2009 vintage in Platter’s wine guide. The 2011 Lady May received a 92 point rating in Wine Advocate, 93 points in Wine Enthusiast and 95 points in Tim Atkin’s South African Report.
