May de Lencquesaing is a member of one of Bordeaux’s oldest wine families, the Miailhe. She is famous for the wines of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, a Grand Cru Classé from Pauillac. Her success with Pichon led to her being named Decanter Magazine Woman of the Year in 1994 and President of the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) in 1993.

May de Lencquesaing is always a very busy lady, Vice President for life of the IWSC, local president of the Legion of Honour in the Medoc, a member of the Academy of Science, Letters and Arts of Bordeaux and is involved in many charitable events.

Sharing time between Europe and South Africa, this tireless octogenarian is perhaps the world’s oldest “flying wine maker”.

Heinrich Louw comes from a farming background, went to Elsenburg Agricultural College and fell in love with the wine country and its industry. He started at Glenelly in January 2000, whilst it was still a fruit farm, and managed the development and renovation of this beautiful Estate as a whole – from turning every brick and stone to planting every single vine, of which the quality grapes today are testament to every drop of blood and sweat invested by himself and his loyal team of farm workers.

Proudly South African, he stays loyal to the tradition of Springbok rugby, biltong, braai and beer whilst sharing this extraordinary dream with his family and Madame de Lencquesaing at Glenelly Estate! Renowned viticulture consultant, Johan Pinaar, supports Heinrich and his team.

Luke O’Cuinneagain grew up amongst the vineyards of the Constantia Valley and that is where the passion for wine and the vine started. Always looking for new and innovative ideas, Luke travelled to and worked in many of the world’s famous wine centres after his studies.

He worked first in Bordeaux at Château Fieuzal, before going to Alsace. In 2006 he spent many months at Screaming Eagle in the Napa Valley, USA. In 2007 he worked under the tutelage of Hubert de Bouard at Chateau Angelus. On the South African wine front he spent five years at Rustenberg Wines in Stellenbosch before joining the team at Glenelly. As well as being the wine maker, Luke also has responsibility for our sales in the domestic South African and neighbouring markets.

OUR COMMUNITY

May de Lencquesaing cares deeply about investing in the community. Under the guidance of a caretaker and full time social worker, the farm workers’ children receive a balanced meal after school and they can use the small library, laptop and internet access for homework.

The Centre also focusses on the Social Development and Personal Upliftment of the farm workers. Improving their reading and writing skills, computer knowledge and recreation development enhances their day-to-day standard of living.
