Glenelly’s Winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain and Brand Ambassador Maxime Bureau enjoyed a very successful visit to China in 2018.
Glenelly hosted a Gala Dinner at the Qing Dynasty Zhizhu Temple Restaurant near the Forbidden City in Beijing. Luke and Maxime, Easy Cellar and Pigeon Hills Winery chairman Zhang Yanzhi, Minister of SA Embassy in Beijing, Ms Balatseng and 80 Glenelly distributors from across China attended this event.
Wine Pairings for the evening included the following:
Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2016 with Grilled Mackerel, Ponzu, Yuzu & Radish
Glass Collection Syrah 2013 with Lobster Ravioli, Consommé & Basil
Glass Collection Red Blend 2011 with Braised Pigeon
Estate Reserve 2011 and Lady May 2012 with Roast Beef, Seared Foie Gras and finally, Peanut Chocolate Cake.
“The Chinese appreciation for Glenelly’s wines, which always amazes me, was once again evident at this sensational dinner which Easy Cellar organised with such professionalism. It was fantastic to see old friends and new faces at the dinner and really inspiring for the Glenelly team.” – Luke O’Cuinneagain.
During Luke and Maxime’s visit they were privileged to visit Pigeon Hills Winery in Ningxia. The creation of this 25 000 m2 winery, built in one year, with 1300 hectares of vineyards saw a life-long dream come true for owner Zhang Yanzhi, Glenelly’s importer. Luke and Maxime spent three days at Pigeon Hills, consulting on the winemaking and blending, for their Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay 2017 and 2018 vintages with chief winemaker, Liao Zusong.
“Pigeon Hills is an awe-inspiring place. The attention to detail and speed with which they have managed to build the winery and plant the vineyards is incredible. It is a pleasure to be working and consulting with such an excellent team. Pigeon Hills is set to become the leading estate in the Chinese wine industry and perhaps among the world’s leaders in the future.” – Luke O’Cuinneagain
To end the Glenelly China Tour, Maxime headed to Qinhuangdao, a port city on the coast of Chinain north-eastern Hebei province, for a Glenelly wine tasting organized by Easy Cellar and China Minsheng Private Banking. Hosted at the Grand Hotel Qinhuang, this was another extraordinary event that clearly demonstrated that China’s love for Glenelly wine is growing at a fascinating speed.
