May de Lencquesaing is a member of one of Bordeaux’s oldest wine families, the Miailhe. She is famous for the wines of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, a Grand Cru Classé from Pauillac. Her success with Pichon led to her being named Decanter Magazine Woman of the Year in 1994 and President of the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) in 1993.

May de Lencquesaing is a very busy lady. She is Vice President for Life of the IWSC, Local President of the Legion of Honour in the Medoc, a member of the Academy of Science, Letters and Arts of Bordeaux and is involved in many exciting projects and charitable events. Sharing time between Europe and South Africa, this tireless nonagenarian is no doubt the world’s oldest “flying wine maker”.

Heinrich Louw comes from a farming background, went to Elsenburg Agricultural College and fell in love with the wine industry and the Cape winelands. He started at Glenelly in January 2000, whilst it was still a fruit farm, and managed the development and renovation of this beautiful estate – from turning every brick and stone to planting every single vine. The excellent quality of Glenelly’s grapes today is testament to the exceptional hard work and commitment of Heinrich and his loyal team of farm workers.

Proudly South African, he stays loyal to the tradition of Springbok rugby, biltong, braai and beer whilst sharing this extraordinary dream with his family and Madame de Lencquesaing at Glenelly Estate! Renowned viticulture consultant, Johan Pienaar, supports Heinrich and his team.

OUR COMMUNITY

May de Lencquesaing has always contributed positively to every community she has ever been associated with. This passion and commitment has seen special attention focussed on the social development of the Glenelly community, including housing, training and recreation, as well as education for her employees’ children. Her passion and belief for investing in their future led to the establishment of the Glenelly Care Centre for the farm children and the Glenelly Recreation Centre for the farm workers in 2010. Under the guidance of caretaker, Rosemary Flandorph, the Care Centre is a safe environment and a place of love, guidance and togetherness, where children receive a balanced meal after school and enjoy use of the library, laptops and internet access for homework.

The Centre also focusses on the personal upliftment of the farm workers, improving their reading and writing skills and computer knowledge.
