WEATHER CONDITIONS – Simonsberg, Stellenbosch
An early, cold and wet winter, followed by a drier late winter, led to budbreak 10–14 days earlier than usual. Exceptional September rainfall made 2023 one of the wettest years on record, creating challenges during flowering and fruit set. From October, conditions turned warm, dry and windy, moderating growth. Heat spikes accelerated ripening, resulting in an early harvest with small, concentrated berries and excellent conditions throughout.
WINEMAKING
The grapes were hand-picked, destemmed and gently pressed. The juice was naturally settled without enzymes and underwent spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel. The wine was then left on its gross lees for six months, with occasional stirring to enhance weight and texture.
